Do weeds grow through resin driveways?

Posted on 29 January 2021

Do weeds grow through resin driveways? This is a common question that is asked when looking at a new driveway. Resin driveways are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. Not only are they visually attractive, but they’re also very durable and will stay looking their best for several years. One of the biggest advantages of choosing resin surfacing is that it’s weed resistant. No weeds should grow up through the surface of your resin driveway. If you’re looking for a company that installs resin driveways in Sheffield, Chesterfield or Doncaster, look no further than Resin Mixed Stone. We can install a beautiful, weed-free driveway for your home or business.

What are resin driveways?

Before we look at further at whether weeds grow through them, let’s take a closer look at what resin driveways are and how they’re made. Resin driveways come in two forms: resin bound or resin bonded. Whilst both use resin and aggregates to create fixed surfaces, there are several differences are between them. Resin bound, the type usually used for driveways, involves the resin being spread across the surface, with loose stones scattered on top. With resin bound, the resin and stone are mixed together before being trowelled into place. Resin bound is the quickest growing surfacing solution for driveways in the UK.

Do weeds grow through resin bound surfaces?

Resin bound driveways are completely bound. This means they’re resistant to weeds. This surfacing doesn’t allow weeds to grow up through the sub-base and penetrate the surface. On occasions, you may find small patches of what looks like weed growth within the resin bound stone, however, there’s an explanation for this. Sometimes, particularly in areas where there’s lots of vegetation, the wind will blow tiny seedlings onto the surface. These then start to germinate, appearing as weeds.

Fortunately, these weeds don’t last long due to the permeability of the resin surface. Due to the porous nature of the resin, any water runs through it instead of settling on top. The seedlings become starved of water, which means that the roots are unable to take hold and thrive. Sometimes, resin bound surfaces are treated before being installed. This makes them even more resistant to weed growth.

Do moss and algae form on resin driveways?

Moss and algae growth is rare on resin driveways. However, it can occur, particularly if weather conditions are damp and humid. Slips and falls can easily occur if the surface is very wet. It can become dangerous to use. Fortunately, any moss or algae on your resin driveway can be dealt with relatively easily.

Apply a market-leading moss and algae killer every now and then according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Alternatively, you can use diluted household bleach. This can be very effective at attacking moss on the surface. Keep in mind that if you do use bleach to remove moss and algae, you must avoid keeping it on the surface for too long. Doing so could result in discolouration of the stone. Make sure you wash your driveway with clean water afterwards. This should remove these unsightly plants and help keep them at bay.

Why avoiding driveway weeds is so important

Are you thinking of choosing an alternative to resin for your driveway? This may be the case if your budget is limited. However, with other surfacing solutions, especially block paving, there’s a strong likelihood of weeds appearing over time. The impact of weeds rearing their heads on your beautiful new driveway goes far beyond aesthetic damage. Unwelcome weeds working their way through the cracks in your driveway will certainly ruin its good looks.

However, there are other issues to consider. Did you know that weeds can cause physical damage to a driveway? As they absorb water, they can allow cracks to expand. Large cracks can be unsightly, dangerous, and expensive to repair. By investing in resin driveways Chesterfield, Sheffield, or Doncaster, you can avoid having to worry about weeds rearing their heads and causing untold damage.

Resin Mixed Stone put down a resin driveway for my mother in October last year. The service and workmanship was excellent and the drive has been totally transformed from its previous old concrete look. My wife and I were so impressed that we used Resin Mixed Stone to wide our existing driveway and then cover the existing tarmac surface with a resin coat. The service and workmanship was again excellent and the new drive looks superb. I would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone who is considering a resin surface.
