How to look after your resin driveway

A resin driveway isn’t just very attractive and incredibly durable – it’s also really easy to care for. Normally, all the maintenance that’s required is regular sweeping and jet washing to keep it looking its best over time. At the same time, it’s important to avoid improper use of the driveway, for example, allowing heavy goods vehicles or skips to be regularly placed on it. Maintenance tips for your resin driveway

One of the biggest benefits of a resin driveway is that it’s so low maintenance. However, keep in mind that some level of maintenance is required. You’ll need to carry out some upkeep if you want to ensure it stays in great condition for as long as possible. If you don’t care for your driveway, it can quickly become unkempt and unsightly. Avoid improper use of your resin driveway

You can do all the sweeping and cleaning you want, but if you’re not using your driveway as it was intended, there’s a good chance that it will lose its good looks pretty quickly. Whilst resin bound driveways are intended to be used for normal vehicular and pedestrian traffic, they are not designed to withstand abnormal loads. With this in mind, it’s best to prevent heavy goods vehicles from parking on your driveway. Avoid placing heavy skips on the driveway too, and try not to drag heavy objects across it either. Try to avoid solvent spillages as much as possible since this can soften and damage the resin binder.  

Carry out regular sweeping 

You’ll need to invest in a good quality stiff broom when you have a resin driveway installed. Regular sweeping can help you to avoid many problems that can occur with resin surfacing. Sweeping will remove leaves as well as airborne seedlings that can land on the resin driveway and cause some weed growth. Any moss growth can also be removed using a stiff broom. 

Perform occasional jet washing 

Jet washing should be carried out periodically to keep your resin driveway in optimal condition. The surface, especially if it has vehicles parked upon it, will accumulate dirt and oils over time, causing it to look worse for wear. Jet washing can make your resin driveway look cleaner, brighter and more attractive. 

However, take note that when jet washing the driveway, you need to take care not to damage the area. The water should be cool but without being too cold. Maintaining a moderate temperature will help to prevent damage to the resin. When spraying the water, make sure the nozzle is at least 20cm from the surface. If a jet washer is sprayed too closely, it could cause damage the driveway.

Remove chewing gum

You should try to avoid dropping chewing gum on your resin driveway, but if you do, it’s important to remove it as quickly as possible. Not only is it unsightly but once it hardens it can be very difficult to remove. Sweeping or jet washing can sometimes get rid of it, but often a freezing spray will need to be used. Spray it on the hardened gum and then use a wall scraper or a similar tool to carefully remove it. Try to avoid digging beneath the gum with a hard edge as this could cause damage to the resin surface.  

Prevent snow and ice build-up 

During the winter months, you’ll need to take steps to prevent snow and ice build-up on your resin driveway. Whilst there’s no way to stop it from laying on the surface unless it’s covered, it can be cleared relatively easily. Use a shovel to clear the snow and spread salt to eliminate ice and frost. Keep in mind that once the weather warms up, you’ll need to wash off the salt thoroughly. The good news is that because resin bound driveways are permeable, moisture from melted snow and ice will simply be absorbed into the ground below.
